In 2008, the FDA warned consumers not to purchase Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream due to the presence of phenoxyethanol, which can weaken the nervous system of breastfed babies. However, according to the American College of Toxicology, Phenoxyethanol does not pose toxicity to the embryo or fetus at doses that could be toxic to the mother. Therefore, this ingredient can be considered for use during pregnancy but should be limited while breastfeeding to avoid the risk of the baby licking/ingesting it through contact with the mother’s skin. Nevertheless, to ensure better safety, it is recommended that mothers consult with a doctor.

However, researchers have studied the effects of women using low-dose Acetylsalicylic Acid during pregnancy and found no increased risk of side effects such as birth defects, preterm birth, or low birth weight. [3] Licorice is recommended to be used in moderation during pregnancy because it is associated with increased blood pressure in mothers and decreased cognitive function in children at birth. However, the licorice content identified in studies is 250g (equivalent to one cup of water per week). This amount is much higher than the concentration of licorice extract used in cosmetics. [5] Research findings indicate a correlation between exposure to Parabens before birth and birth outcomes such as birth weight, gestational age, and height in pregnant women. Specifically, the concentrations of methyl and propyl parabens in maternal urine are positively correlated with birth weight in mothers with the GSTM1 and GSTT1-null genotype. [6] The amount of Retinoids absorbed very minimally through the skin when applied topically. However, there are 4 published case reports of birth defects in the literature associated with topical tretinoin use, which are consistent with retinoid embryopathy. [7] Chemical sunscreen ingredients can be absorbed through the skin, and four of them – Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, and Avobenzone – have been shown to disrupt hormones, while the others do not have enough data for the FDA to confirm their safety. Additionally, chemical sunscreen ingredients often make up a large portion of the formula, resulting in higher absorption into the skin compared to other ingredients, leading to a higher risk.
