[4] The amount of Retinoids absorbed very minimally through the skin when applied topically. However, there are 4 published case reports of birth defects in the literature associated with topical tretinoin use, which are consistent with retinoid embryopathy. As a result, if exposed, they can remain in the body for a long time and cause many negative health effects, such as reduced immune function, increased risk of thyroid disease, liver cancer, and lipid disorders.
