[1] Phenoxyethanol là chất bảo quản thường được sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm và các sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân. Phenoxyethanol có thể được tìm thấy tự nhiên trong trà xanh. Nó đã được Hội đồng Chuyên gia đánh giá Thành phần Mỹ phẩm (CIR) kết luận an toàn khi sử dụng với nồng độ hiện tại là < 1%. Ngoài ra, nó cũng được Liên minh châu Âu (EU) cho phép sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm với đồng độ tối đa là 1%. Hiện tại, chưa có bất kỳ báo cáo nào cho thấy Phenoxyethanol có thể gây hại cho thai nhi. Tuy nhiên, vào năm 2008, FDA đã cảnh báo người tiêu dùng không nên sử dụng Kem núm vú Mommy’s Bliss vì có chứa Phenoxyethanol được cho là có thể gây khó thở hoặc nôn mửa và tiêu chảy ở trẻ sơ sinh có thể tiếp xúc khi bú mẹ. Mặc dù FDA chưa nhận được bất kỳ báo cáo nào về bệnh tật liên quan đến sản phẩm này nhưng nhà sản xuất vẫn tự nguyện thu hồi khỏi thị trường. [2] Fragrance /Parfum trên nhãn sản phẩm đại diện cho một hỗn hợp không được tiết lộ của nhiều loại hóa chất và thành phần tạo mùi hương. Nó có nguy cơ gây kích ứng da. Đặc biệt, Fragrance thường chứa Phthalate – một loại dung môi giúp cố định hương thơm nhưng có thể hoạt động như hormone và can thiệp vào nội tiết tố cơ thể. Ngoài ra, các nghiên cứu còn cho thấy rằng việc mẹ tiếp xúc với Phthalate trong thời kỳ mang thai có ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến cả sức khỏe của mẹ, thai nhi và trẻ sơ sinh. Phơi nhiễm Phthalate có thể dẫn đến các biến chứng thai kỳ như tiểu đường, tăng cân, tăng huyết áp ở mẹ; làm tăng nguy cơ sinh non và mắc các rối loạn phát triển thần kinh ở trẻ khi sinh ra như rối loạn tăng độ giảm chú ý, rối loạn phổ tự kỷ, giảm kỹ năng vận động và phát triển ngôn ngữ. Do đó, mặc dù Phthalate có thể chỉ xuất hiện với một lượng rất nhỏ trong mỹ phẩm cho Fragrance thường chỉ được dùng với nồng độ dưới 1% nhưng để đảm bảo an toàn thì mẹ vẫn nên hạn chế sử dụng các sản phẩm có chứa Fragrance trong thời kỳ mang thai. [3] Tretinoin bôi ngoài da thường được sử dụng để điều trị mụn trứng cá và cải thiện các dấu hiệu lão hóa. Tuy nhiên, nó gây lo ngại về nguy cơ gây dị tật bẩm sinh ở thai nhi do có sự tương đồng với Isotretinoin (Accutane), một chất gây quái thai ở người đã được công nhận. Vào tháng 9/1983, Học viện Da liễu Hoa Kỳ đã yêu cầu các thành viên báo cáo kết quả mang thai của những phụ nữ vô tình tiếp xúc với Isotretinoin (Accutane) trong thời kỳ mang thai. Trong số 35 trường hợp mang thai có tiếp xúc với Isotretinoin được báo cáo, 29 trường hợp (83%) dẫn đến sảy thai tự nhiên hoặc trẻ sơ sinh bị dị tật bẩm sinh (Nguồn PubMed). Tuy nhiên, một nghiên cứu khác kéo dài từ năm 1983 – 2003 đã quan sát 106 phụ nữ mang thai tiếp xúc với Tretinoin bôi ngoài da trong ba tháng đầu thai kỳ và khi so sánh với 306 phụ nữ mang thai khác không tiếp xúc với Tretinoin bôi ngoài da, kết quả không có sự khác biệt lớn về tỷ lệ sảy thai, dị tật bẩm sinh hay khác biệt về cân nặng, chiều dài và chu vi đầu của trẻ khi sinh ra ở hai nhóm. Điều này dẫn đến kết luận việc tiếp xúc với Tretinoin bôi tại chỗ trong ba tháng đầu thai kỳ trong nghiên cứu không liên quan đến việc tăng nguy cơ cho kết quả thai kỳ (Nguồn PubMed). Tuy nhiên, nó chỉ mang giá trị trấn an những mẹ bầu vô tình tiếp xúc với Tretinoin trong giai đoạn đầu thai kỳ chứ không thể thay thế kết luận Tretinoin là thành phần có rủi ro cao cho thai nhi. Tóm lại, mẹ nên tránh sử dụng các sản phẩm có chứa Tretinoin khi mang thai để đảm bảo an toàn.
[4] Các thành phần chống nắng hóa học có thể hấp thụ qua da và 4 trong số đó là Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate & Avobenzone hiện vẫn đang gây tranh cãi về nguy cơ gây rối loạn nội tiết tố cho người dùng. [5] Parabens là thành phần bảo quản thường được sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm và các sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân. Tuy nhiên, các nghiên cứu đã phát hiện ra rằng việc tiếp xúc Parabens ở phụ nữ mang thai có liên quan đến sự thay đổi nồng độ hormone tuyến giáp. Điều này dẫn đến những tác động bất lợi đến sự phát triển thần kinh và tăng trưởng của thai nhi. [6] DMDM Hydantoin là chất bảo quản có khả năng giải phóng Formaldehyde. Các nghiên cứu đã cho thấy rằng Formaldehyde gây ra những tác động bất lợi đến sinh sản và phát triển. Việc phơi nhiễm Formaldehyde ở phụ nữ mang thai có thể làm tăng nguy cơ sảy thai tự nhiên. Mặc dù những nghiên cứu chỉ mới được thực hiện trên động vật (chuột) hoặc theo dõi kết quả từ những người có khả năng tiếp xúc với Formaldehyde nhưng các bằng chứng đã cho thấy mối liên hệ chặt chẽ giữa độc tính sinh sản và phát triển với việc phơi nhiễm Formaldehyde.
