[1] Glycolic Acid has been studied in mice and shown to affect the physical development of offspring when administered to pregnant mice at a dose of 300mg/kg/day for 20 consecutive days via oral ingestion. In comparison, adult mice typically weigh between 12 – 40g. Therefore, the amount of Glycolic Acid absorbed daily would constitute between 2.5% – 0.75% of the mouse’s body weight, which could be at least 100,000 times higher than the amount of Glycolic Acid a human might absorb when using a cosmetic containing 10% of this ingredient (as Glycolic Acid can only be absorbed through the skin up to about 30%). Experts suggest that using skincare products containing Glycolic Acid during pregnancy is unlikely to pose a risk to the developing baby. (Source: PubMed)

[2] Salicylic Acid/ Betaine Salicylate can be absorbed through the skin in small amounts. However, researchers have studied the effects of women using low-dose Acetylsalicylic Acid during pregnancy and found no increased risk of side effects such as birth defects, preterm birth, or low birth weight. Therefore, mothers may consider using facial products containing BHA (Salicylic Acid) at concentrations < 2% during pregnancy. However, for better safety, it is advisable to consult with a doctor. (Source: PubMed)

[3] Licorice is recommended to be used in moderation during pregnancy because it is associated with increased blood pressure in mothers and decreased cognitive function in children at birth. However, the licorice content identified in studies is 250g (equivalent to one cup of water per week). This amount is much higher than the concentration of licorice extract used in cosmetics. Therefore, mothers may consider using cosmetics containing this ingredient during pregnancy. However, for better safety, it is advisable to consult with a doctor. (Source: Health)

[4] According to the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA), Tea Tree Oil can be used during pregnancy with a dilution of less than 1%. However, pregnant women will have more sensitive skin and be more prone to sunburn due to hormonal changes. Therefore, using cosmetics containing essential oils may cause irritation or worsen skin issues. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when using cosmetics with essential oils, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy, to ensure better safety.

[5] The amount of Retinoids absorbed very minimally through the skin when applied topically. However, there are 4 published case reports of birth defects in the literature associated with topical tretinoin use, which are consistent with retinoid embryopathy. Therefore, pregnant women are not advised to use this ingredient throughout pregnancy. (Source: PubMed)

[6] PFAS are a group of persistent chemicals that break down very slowly. As a result, if exposed, they can remain in the body for a long time and cause many negative health effects, such as reduced immune function, increased risk of thyroid disease, liver cancer, and lipid disorders. Particularly for women, exposure to PFAS has been linked to endometriosis, and if exposed during pregnancy, it may lead to low birth weight in newborns. Therefore, this chemical should be avoided as much as possible at all stages. (Source: PubMed)

(*) Salicylic Acid can be used in small amounts (< 2% in cosmetics) for facial skincare during pregnancy. Studies show that pregnant women who used low-dose Acetylsalicylic Acid did not experience an increased risk to the fetus. (Nguồn: PubMed). However, this ingredient should not be used in body care products as it may increase absorption, leading to higher risks.
