Đối với mỹ phẩm trang điểm, không có sản phẩm an toàn tuyệt đối bởi tất cả đều chứa chất tạo màu nhân tạo (các chất bắt đầu bằng ký tự CI – kết hợp với 5 chữ số khác nhau). Các thành phần tạo màu này hầu hết sẽ có nguồn gốc từ dầu mỏ hoặc nhựa than đá. Mặc dù chúng đã được FDA chấp nhận sử dụng trong thực phẩm, thuốc và mỹ phẩm với nồng độ nhất định nhưng vẫn có thể gây kích ứng da hoặc ảnh hưởng không tốt đến sức khỏe (nếu dùng quá nhiều). Do đó, lời khuyên dành cho mẹ là hãy trang điểm đơn giản trong thời gian mang thai để giảm thiểu rủi ro ở mức thấp nhất.

[2] Fragrance /Parfum trên nhãn sản phẩm đại diện cho một hỗn hợp không được tiết lộ của nhiều loại hóa chất và thành phần tạo mùi hương. Nó có nguy cơ gây kích ứng cao. Thành phần này cũng có thể hấp thụ qua da và được tìm thấy trong sữa mẹ. Chưa có những báo cáo cụ thể về tác dụng phụ của Fragrance đối với sức khỏe vì nó có thể chứa nhiều loại hóa chất khác nhau mà không được công bố rõ ràng trên bao bì. Tuy nhiên, các hỗn hợp mùi thơm thường chứa Phthalate – một loại dung môi giúp cố định hương thơm nhưng có thể làm tăng nguy cơ mắc bệnh tiểu đường ở thai phụ và có thể ảnh hưởng đến kỹ năng vận động và ngôn ngữ của trẻ em khi sinh ra. [3] Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy có mối quan hệ giữa việc tiếp xúc với Parabens trước khi sinh và kết quả khi sinh như cân nặng, tuổi thai và chiều cao ở phụ nữ mang thai. Cụ thể, nồng độ methyl và propyl paraben trong nước tiểu của mẹ tỷ lệ thuận với cân nặng khi sinh ở những bà mẹ có kiểu gen GSTM1 và GSTT1-null. Nói cách khác, việc hấp thụ Paraben có thể dẫn đến tình trạng tăng cân khi sinh ở phụ nữ. Do đó, thành phần không được khuyến cáo sử dụng trong thời gian mang thai. (Nguồn MDPI)
[4] Talc có thể bị nhiễm sợi amiăng, gây nguy cơ ngộ độc đường hô hấp và ung thư. Tuy nhiên, theo công bố mới nhất của FDA vào ngày 5/4/2024 về việc thử nghiệm 50 mẫu mỹ phẩm có chứa Talc thì kết quả cho thấy “Không phát hiện amiăng trong bất kỳ mẫu nào trong số 50 mẫu được thử nghiệm”_(Nguồn FDA). Dù vậy, điều đó không có nghĩa là Talc có trong tất cả các loại mỹ phẩm trên thị trường đều hoàn toàn không chứa Amiăng. Để đảm bảo an toàn tốt nhất, mẹ vẫn nên hạn chế sử dụng các sản phẩm có chứa Talc dưới dạng bột (có thể hít vào) để hạn chế rủi ro về sức khỏe ở mức thấp nhất.
