[1] Phenoxyethanol bị nghi ngờ là có ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến trẻ sơ sinh khi nuốt trực tiếp thành phần này từ mỹ phẩm của mẹ. Cụ thể, vào năm 2008, FDA đã cảnh báo người tiêu dùng không nên sử dụng Kem núm vú Mommy’s Bliss vì có chứa Phenoxyethanol được cho là có thể gây khó thở hoặc nôn mửa và tiêu chảy ở trẻ sơ sinh khi nuốt trực tiếp từ việc bú mẹ (Nguồn Campaign for Sage Cosmetics) . Do đó, mẹ nên tránh sử dụng mỹ phẩm có Phenoxyethanol ở những vùng da bé có thể tiếp xúc và nuốt phải như ngực, ti. Tuy nhiên, không có nguy cơ sức khỏe nào của Phenoxyethanol được biết đến đối với người mẹ và hiện chưa có báo cáo cho thấy Phenoxyethanol khi được hấp thụ qua da và đi vào sữa mẹ sẽ đủ lớn để gây hại cho trẻ sơ sinh với nồng độ sử dụng theo quy định hiện tại là < 1% trong mỹ phẩm. Thế nên, tùy thuộc vào mức độ thận trọng, mẹ có thể cân nhắc sử dụng hoặc không đối với các sản phẩm có chứa Phenoxyethanol trong thời gian cho con bú.
[2] Fragrance /Parfum trên nhãn sản phẩm đại diện cho một hỗn hợp không được tiết lộ của nhiều loại hóa chất và thành phần tạo mùi hương. Nó có nguy cơ gây kích ứng da. Ngoài ra, Fragrance còn có thể chứa Phthalate – một loại dung môi giúp cố định hương thơm nhưng có ảnh hưởng không tốt đến sức khỏe. Thực tế, bên cạnh mỹ phẩm, phụ nữ còn có thể phơi nhiễm Phathalate từ nhiều nguồn khác, đặc biệt là trong việc tiếp xúc với các sản phẩm có nguồn gốc từ nhựa. Tuy nhiên, theo kết quả từ Chương trình Giám sát Sữa mẹ Bavaria (BAMBI), Phthalate và các chất chuyển hóa của chúng có thể được phát hiện trong sữa mẹ nhưng lượng Phthalate mà trẻ sơ sinh hấp thụ là rất thấp. Do đó, việc trẻ tiếp xúc với Phthalate từ sữa mẹ không gây nguy hại cho sức khỏe (Nguồn ScienceDirect). Trong khi đó, Fragrance trong mỹ phẩm thường chỉ chiếm lượng nhỏ dưới 1% nên nếu có chứa Phthalate thì thành phần này cũng có nồng độ rất thấp và không gây ra rủi ro đáng kể cho trẻ bú mẹ. Mặc dù vậy, mẹ vẫn nên cẩn trọng khi sử dụng mỹ phẩm có chứa Fragrance nếu sở hữu làn da nhạy cảm vì thành phần này dễ gây kích ứng.
[3] Chlorphenesin đã được Liên minh Châu Âu (EU) cho phép sử dụng làm chất bảo quản trong mỹ phẩm và các sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân với nồng độ tối đa là 0.3%. Thành phần này có thể hấp thụ qua da nhưng không có báo cáo độc tính. Nó được Hội đồng Chuyên gia đánh giá Thành phần mỹ phẩm (CIR) kết luận an toàn khi sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm (Nguồn PubMed). Tuy nhiên, cùng với Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin cũng được tìm thấy trong kem bôi núm vú Mommy’s Bliss và được cho là có thể gây khó thở hoặc nôn mửa, tiêu chảy ở trẻ sơ sinh khi nuốt trực tiếp từ việc bú mẹ (Nguồn Cosmeticsinfo). Mặc dù sau đó chưa có những nghiên cứu trực tiếp về tác động bất lợi của Chlorphenesin đối với trẻ sơ sinh nhưng để đảm bảo an toàn thì mẹ nên tránh sử dụng mỹ phẩm có chứa thành phần này ở những vùng da bé có thể tiếp xúc và nuốt phải. Về việc sử dụng mỹ phẩm có chứa Chlorphenesin ở một vùng da nhỏ không tiếp xúc với bé thì tùy thuộc vào mức độ thận trọng, mẹ có thể cân nhắc sử dụng hoặc không.
[4] Hiện tại, chưa có nghiên cứu trực tiếp về việc sử dụng Salicylic Acid trên da trong thời gian cho con bú. Tuy nhiên, thành phần này có khả năng hấp thụ thấp qua da (không thể phát hiện được Salicylic Acid ở nồng độ lên đến 25% trên da bình thường). Do đó, nó được cho là khó xuất hiện đáng kể trong sữa mẹ để gây ra các rủi ro sức khỏe cho trẻ sơ sinh khi chỉ dùng với một lượng nhỏ trong mỹ phẩm (Nguồn National Library of Medicine). Mặc dù vậy, mẹ nên tránh bôi lên vết thương hở hoặc vùng da bé có thể tiếp xúc. Ngoài ra, bản chất của BHA là một chất tẩy tế bào chết và nó có thể khiến da trở nên mỏng yếu, nhạy cảm hơn khi vừa sử dụng. Do đó, mẹ vẫn nên cẩn trong khi sử dụng các sản phẩm có chứa thành phần Salicylic Acid.

[5] DMDM Hydantoin là chất bảo quản có khả năng giải phóng Formaldehyde. Nghiên cứu trên động vật đang cho con bú cho thấy nồng độ Formaldehyde cao hơn 2ppm có thể xâm nhập vào sữa. Thành phần này có thể gây ra những tác động bất lợi đến sinh sản và phát triển khi nghiên cứu trên chuột. Mặc dù chưa có những nghiên cứu và báo cáo cụ thể về tác động của Formaldehyde đối với trẻ sơ sinh và trẻ nhỏ nhưng để đảm bảo an toàn thì mẹ vẫn nên tránh sử dụng các sản phẩm có chứa các chất bảo quản có khả năng giải phóng Formaldehyde khi đang cho con bú. [6] Tretinoin được hấp thụ kém khi bôi ngoài da nên được cho là có nguy cơ thấp đối với trẻ bú mẹ. Mặc dù vậy, thành phần này có sự tương đồng với Isotretinoin (Accutane) – một chất gây dị tật bẩm sinh và hiện chưa có nghiên cứu về về việc sử dụng Tretinoin trong thời gian cho con bú.
