[1] Cam Thảo là một chất tạo hương vị thường được sử dụng trong một số loại bánh kẹo tại châu Âu. Tuy nhiên, việc tiêu thụ quá 500mg/tuần ở phụ nữ mang thai đã được ghi nhận có nhiều khả năng sinh trước tuần 38 (Nguồn Cosmeticsinfo). Tuy nhiên, đây là con số tiêu thụ qua đường ăn/uống, không phải đường bôi ngoài da. Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate và Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract là 2 thành phần có nguồn gốc Cam Thảo được sử dụng phổ biến nhất trong mỹ phẩm và chúng đều tan trong nước. Điều đó có nghĩa là chúng rất khó để thẩm thấu qua hàng rào lipid trên bề mặt da. Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate không phát hiện được trong khoang thụ thể khi thử nghiệm khả năng thẩm thấu qua da (Nguồn Cosmeticsinfo). Như vậy, các thành phần cam thảo khi bôi tại chỗ sẽ không hấp thụ qua da quá 1%. Ngoài ra, cam thảo được sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm thường có nồng độ thấp (không quá 5%). Như vậy, nếu sử dụng một hủ kem dưỡng da mặt có khối lượng 100g có thể dùng tối thiểu trong 2 tháng thì lượng cam thảo chỉ chiếm khoảng 5g. Trong đó, chỉ 1% của 5g là 0,05g (tương đương 50mg) cam thảo có thể hấp thụ qua da. Ngoài ra, sản phẩm được dùng trong 8 tuần thì lượng cam thảo hấp thụ qua da mỗi tuần chỉ khoảng 6,25mg. Con số này nhỏ hơn rất nhiều so với mốc 500mg/tuần có thể gây nguy cơ sinh non. Do đó, việc sử dụng mỹ phẩm có chứa Cam Thảo trong thời gian mang thai thường có rủi ro không đáng kể. Tuy nhiên, để đảm bảo an toàn tốt hơn thì mẹ nên hạn chế sử dụng mỹ phẩm dưỡng da toàn thân có chứa Cam Thảo hoặc tham khảo thêm ý kiến từ bác sĩ.

[2] Phenoxyethanol là chất bảo quản thường được sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm và các sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân. Phenoxyethanol có thể được tìm thấy tự nhiên trong trà xanh. Nó đã được Hội đồng Chuyên gia đánh giá Thành phần Mỹ phẩm (CIR) kết luận an toàn khi sử dụng với nồng độ hiện tại là < 1%. Ngoài ra, nó cũng được Liên minh châu Âu (EU) cho phép sử dụng trong mỹ phẩm với đồng độ tối đa là 1%. Hiện tại, chưa có bất kỳ báo cáo nào cho thấy Phenoxyethanol có thể gây hại cho thai nhi. Tuy nhiên, vào năm 2008, FDA đã cảnh báo người tiêu dùng không nên sử dụng Kem núm vú Mommy’s Bliss vì có chứa Phenoxyethanol được cho là có thể gây khó thở hoặc nôn mửa và tiêu chảy ở trẻ sơ sinh có thể tiếp xúc khi bú mẹ. Mặc dù FDA chưa nhận được bất kỳ báo cáo nào về bệnh tật liên quan đến sản phẩm này nhưng nhà sản xuất vẫn tự nguyện thu hồi khỏi thị trường. Do đó, mẹ có thể sử dụng mỹ phẩm có chứa Phenoxyethanol khi mang thai nhưng nên hạn chế sử dụng ở những vùng da có thể tiếp xúc với trẻ sơ sinh khi cho con bú. (Nguồn Cosmeticsinfo)

[3] Theo Hiệp hội các nhà trị liệu bằng hương thơm chuyên nghiệp quốc tế IFPA, các loại tinh dầu tạo mùi thơm: Orange Oil và Eucalyptus Oil (bạch đàn) có thể sử dụng khi mang thai với nồng độ pha loãng dưới 1%. Tuy nhiên, nếu sở hữu da đầu nhạy cảm, các sản phẩm dầu gội có chứa essential oils có thể khiến da dầu trở nên mẩn cảm hơn. Dù vậy, tỷ lệ kích ứng với essential oils trong dầu gội thường rất thấp vì sản phẩm này không tồn tại lâu trên da.

(*) Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate là thành phần có nguồn gốc từ Cam Thảo. Chiết xuất Cam Thảo được cho là có khả năng hấp thụ rất thấp qua da do đặc tính tan trong nước, khó thẩm thấu qua hàng rào lipid trên bề mặt da. Tuy nhiên, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate là hoạt chất tan trong dầu nên có khả năng thẩm thấu qua da cao hơn. Thực tế, tỷ lệ hấp thụ qua da của Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate vẫn được đánh giá là rất thấp so với đường uống và thành phần này chỉ được sử dụng một lượng nhỏ trong mỹ phẩm nhưng đảm bảo an toàn thì mẹ vẫn nên hạn chế sử dụng khi mang thai.
